Public code and transparent maintenance.
Use verified distribution channels only.
The manager itself is not a Trojan or virus.
Follow game rules, EULAs, and mod licenses.
Using R2ModMan is legal in the sense that it is open-source software distributed under the MIT License. However, installing mods may affect your rights under a game End User License Agreement. Some publishers allow client-side mods; others restrict multiplayer modding or commercial use of modified assets.
You must read and follow each game EULA and each mod author license. This website does not grant permission to modify any game. We provide educational information about a third-party tool maintained by ebkr.
Modding should enhance enjoyment without harming other players. Use profile exports fairly in co-op sessions, disclose gameplay-changing mods to your group, and avoid harassment or exploit mods in public lobbies where the community expects vanilla rules.
Help mod authors by following their instructions, reporting bugs constructively, and crediting work when sharing curated packs.
R2ModMan source is publicly available in the r2modmanPlus repository maintained by ebkr. Anyone can inspect how the manager downloads, installs, and launches mods. The MIT License allows use, modification, and distribution with attribution and license notice preservation.
Open source is a core reason the tool is trusted across millions of Thunderstore downloads. Community contributors can propose fixes, and security researchers can audit behavior without relying on closed binaries alone.
R2ModMan itself is not malware, spyware, or a Trojan. It is a mod management utility. Reputation issues usually trace to unofficial download sites that wrap installers with adware or to individual mods from untrusted authors.
The developer explicitly warns about third-party redistribution sites falsely claiming to be official. Only two channels are recognized as legitimate: the Thunderstore ebkr/r2modman package and official GitHub releases from the same developer.
By using modding tools you accept responsibility for your system and accounts. Back up saves before large mod changes. Verify download integrity with published hashes. Understand that mods can break after game updates or cause crashes.
